Chris Brown - Yeah 3x (Goodwin Analysis)

I have decided to analyse ‘yeah’ by Chris Brown using Goodwin’s points. This video consists of most of Goodwin’s points of what he thinks a music video should have i. e relationship between the lyrics and visuals, voyeurism and intertextual reference.
Music Video demonstrates genre characteristics:
The music video demonstrates the genre, R&B in many ways. Firstly the video starts off with a upbeat sound and then Chris Brown starts dancing on the bus, this immediately shows that it is R&B as everything is upbeat. Also the clothing Chris brown wears is casual. He goes from the shirt to the ‘street look’. The atmosphere created in the video is very lively as kids are shown to be happy. The dancing is cut very quickly which makes the moves stronger.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals:
In this video there is a close relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. At 0.46 when Chris brown says “Move your body out on the floor put you trouble aside”, the camera focuses on Chris brown by a close up, and shows him dancing and moving his body. It then cuts to another location where Chris brown is also performing. Also the kids behind are all acting happy and joyful thus ‘putting your troubles aside’.  Also when Chris Brown says “it’s party time” the shot then cuts from him dancing to a wide range of people following him, creating the party mood. Due to this it is evidential that the lyrics go with the visuals.
There is relationship between music and visuals:
The video starts off very slowly, the music is very dim and there is no actual music being played. You can just hear children playing in the background.  As the protagonist is introduced shortly after, the music becomes very upbeat and loud. This then quickens as the video progresses. When Chris brown is dancing the music focuses on him and makes him the main concept, it does this by the pitch as before the music was very calm however know it is very loud and energetic. When the music speeds up the camera shots gradually become quicker as it cuts between Chris Brown performing two dance sequences. The children also add to this as they are very loud.

The demands of the record label will include the need of lots of close up’s of the artist and the artist might develop motifs which recur across their work.
Chris Brown is represented as being the main star in the video. This is done mainly by the use of close ups used when Chris Brown is dancing. The use of close ups shows the facial expression of the artist allowing the audience to connect with the music video in a better way. It also reveals the genre of the video as it shows how happy or sad the artist is and what purpose they have to sing what they are singing.
