Possible Costume Ideas

Costume design 1

The protagonist of our music video will be a young man. He will be wearing fashionable clothes, just like Chris Brown does in his video “yeah”.  As the music video we have chosen fits the R&B genre the dress code will be casual.  Looking at Chris browns videos i have closely looked at what he wears in his different music videos. I found out that he keeps changing what he wears in different parts of the video. This is something we might do.

-          The artist is wearing a blue hoodie which shows a clear R&B outfit as its more casual then formal.
-          The jeans match the jacket Chris Brown is wearing which shows his “swagger”. This is a key feature in a music video. He is wearing a blue contrast throughout which embeds with the background colour.
-          Although it’s not sunny he is wearing sunglasses, this adds to his looks and swagger.
-          They way Chris Brown stand is with his legs slightly wide apart which is something that all artists do when performing.

Costume design 2

-          Here you can see Chris brown has a change of clothing. From the more street look to the casual look.
-          He looks very smart in this shot as he has a black waistcoat with a white shirt and red tie. This colour combination makes him look more smart
-          He didn’t want to go for the formal look as he has rolled up his sleeves and is also wearing trainers.
-          Chris browns dancer also wears smart looking clothes, showing his role in the video. As you can see they are both wearing the same colours just in different ways. The main colour scheme is white and black.

Taking inspiration from the video “yeah” by Chris Brown I have taken a picture of costume that I might use in our music video. As our video is R&B I had to create a casual look. I think this costume suits the R&B genre with the colour combination used.

Album Art Research

Here is Ed Sheeran’s album cover. You can see that that the cover is very bland with the colours used and the amount that’s going on. It’s just a simple close up of the artist. This shows that he may be a new singer or it maybe his first album. The different type of orange colour combinations overpowers the artist face; it’s almost like he is hidden which may show his personality.

Here is Chris browns album cover called ‘graffiti’. You can see that the main focus is on the main artist Chris Brown. This is emphasised with the low angle shot used, which gives him a sense of authority. The album cover looks more like a carton, based on the colours and images used. The artist’s name isn’t as clear as it blends in with the background colours. The background picture looks like the earth, this may show the story hidden in the album as it may be about his own life as most of his wrapping is about what’s going on in his life.

This is album cover by Drake. Most other album covers has a picture of some sort of the artist however this album cover is totally different as there is no picture of the main artist. Also the main album title isn’t in a straight line like normal album covers, this is a pyramid feature. This may show that before drake wasn’t as well known but when he started realising albums he soon got to the top hence a picture of a person standing at the top. Furthermore the colour used in this cover is a contrast of black and white, which may tell us how his like transformed.

Here is an album cover by usher. You can see the main focus of this cover is on the main artist. The facial expression on the artists face shows that this album may be about love or something upsetting as Usher looks very dull and hurt. You can also see a bit of the tattoo on his wrist which may give a meaning in the album.

Below is a questionnaire I have made for my target audience asking what type of music they like, what genre they like the most and how they consume their music. Creating an audience questionnaire will help us find out information needed in order to make our music video successful and appeal to our target audience. The questionnaire will be given to 20 people from all different ages and genders.  Once we have collected the results we will analyse them on a pie chart to show exactly what people like and didn’t like.

Digipak Research

Here are some images i have found that will give me an idea of my own digipak design. As digipak’s help promote the album in a different way it is essential that it is eye catching so users have a urge to buy it.
Robbie Williams Digipak-
Looking at this digipak you can see that there is a brown theme with him in the background going through all of the digipak. This emphasises him as being the star singer. You can see that the back of the digipak always consist of what songs are on the CD and any exclusive ones. This is a 6 frame digipak.
Rihanna Digipak- this is also a 6 frame digipak. You can see that the back of the digipak has not only the songs that are in the album but a short summery of her and the album. Also the front of the digipak is a close up of here, there is also a similar shot inside which shows that she’s the main singer. Most digipaks always have a close up of the singer.
Michale Buble Digipak- This is again a 6 frame digipak. You can see that there is a shot of michlae buble in nearly every frame which shows the emphasis on him.

Moodboard of Album Covers of Similar Artists

Here I have created a moodboard of different album covers. I decided to create a moodboard to show the different album covers that are created over a wide range of genres. Most R&B album covers have the main artist in the front. The main focus is obviously on the artist but it’s also the clothing the artist is wearing. Fashion in the music industry is a big part as this influences the audience a lot more know.

Copyright Email

The track we have chosen to do for our Media project has a copyright issue. For us to make sure that this track can be used, I will write to the record company asking if i have permission to use the song. Below is an email that I have written.

I am an A Level student writing to request your permission to use Michael Buble track ‘feeling good’
With your permission, this track will be used in our A level Media Studies project, which involves creating our own music video with a song of your choice. We will also have to produce an album cover and a magazine. The artist in my music video will not be using the original artist's name, 'Michale Buble' as I will be creating a new marketing strategy for a new upcoming artist.

If I receive your permission, this track would ONLY be used in an educational context, and will be viewed by my media class, my media teacher and the OCR examination board moderator. It would NOT be used for any financial purposes or gain, nor the school or I intend to make any profit out of using your artist's track.

The artist and your company will be fully approved throughout pre-production and the final video. An email back of the copyright notice can be recorded in the project.
I look forward to hearing you.
